$30 on the hour, or $45 for a 90 minute and so on, is what we work towards today and is the bare minimum to make this a sustainable career.
This number is based on the old golden rule of $20 being a "fair tip" for an hour of massage, and how inflation has affected that number over the last decade. But I understand that this rule has been around for at least twice as long.
The truth is that $20 tip, while still something, simply does not make this a sustainable career for anyone, anywhere today.
The better we can take care of ourselves, the better we can take care of you.
Please understand that tips make up half, or more of a massage therapists income. In other industries in the US, people rely even more on tip culture for our careers to be sustainable. I truly believe we need to move away from tip culture as a society and I thank you for reading this far.
The main way Massage Therapists' move up in the pay bracket of this industry is through tips, and receiving less than what is sustainable directly impacts how well we can do this kind of work. Your generosity enables us to make ends meet and keeps our lights on food on the table.
Tipping in not necessary for my private practice, including sessions with discounted rates. But, if you find that I am deserving and have the means, know that your generosity and kindness is reciprocated with the upmost gratitude.
My standard rates reflect the quality and effectiveness of my work, but discounts and the sliding scale make it affordable and accessible.
